Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Awards Program

Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Awards Program 2023

UM ORSP Research Development (RD) invites internal Notices of Intent, followed by internal Invited Pre-Proposals, from early career chemical sciences faculty seeking UM nomination to the Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Awards Program[1], which provides discretionary funding to faculty at an early stage in their careers. Criteria for selection include an independent body of scholarship attained in the early years of their appointment, and a demonstrated commitment to education. The program provides an unrestricted research grant of $100,000.

Nominees must hold a full-time tenure-track academic appointment, and are expected to have been appointed no earlier than mid-year 2017[2]. Awardees are from Ph.D. granting departments in which scholarly research is a principal activity. Undergraduate education is an important component. UM may submit only one Camille Dreyfus nomination annually.

The Camille & Henry Dreyfus Foundation (the Foundation) seeks Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholars who demonstrate leadership in research and education. Nominations must provide compelling evidence of the advance of important knowledge in the chemical sciences by the nominee. Further, the nomination should describe dedication and contributions to education in the chemical sciences, particularly with respect to undergraduates.

The nominee’s scholarly research achievements are assessed by a panel of distinguished faculty in the chemical sciences. The letters of recommendation should address the nominee’s research accomplishments as an independent faculty member. Other considered factors are: awards and honors, publication of research achievements in leading journals, and success in attracting research funding.

UM faculty wishing to compete for nomination must first submit a Notice of Intent (NOI). The NOI should give a short project working title, a draft project abstract of 200 words or less, 3 to 5 keywords[3], the applicant’s name, e-mail, appointment title, department, date of UM tenure-track appointment, chairperson name, and chairperson email. After NOI submission, chairperson will be automatically prompted (and required) to very briefly confirm their support for the NOI within one week of submission.

Eligible faculty who submit an on-time NOI and whose chairperson confirms their support of the NOI within the deadline will then be invited to prepare an Internal Pre-Proposal as a single PDF containing the following elements, for submission to the Ole Miss InfoReady Portal by the posted internal deadline for the competition year.

  1. A chairperson’s draft letter of nomination highlighting the nominee’s achievements.
    • Limit to one page for this internal pre-proposal.
    • If the applicant is selected for nomination, the chair will be given the opportunity to expand this letter to two pages, and to refine and polish for final approval/signature/inclusion/ submission to the Foundation.
  2. A summary description of the nominee’s research accomplishments as an independent faculty member, and a description of research plans.
    • Limit to three pages for this internal pre-proposal.
    • If selected for nomination, the applicant will be given the opportunity to expand this to five pages before submission to the Foundation, including references, with use of at least one graphic being encouraged.
  3. A statement of the nominee’s dedication to education in the chemical sciences.
    • Limit to one page for this internal pre-proposal.
    • If the applicant is selected for nomination, they will be given the opportunity to expand this to two pages before submission to the Foundation.
  4. A four page CV including a list of publications in which independent contributions and undergraduate coauthors are clearly identified. Research support should be indicated.
  5. A budget describing how award funds are anticipated to be used.
  6. For the internal pre-proposal, the applicant may limit the budget to half a page, need NOT fill out a detailed ORSP budget. Just tell how/why $$ will be spent.
  7. If the applicant is selected for nomination, they will then be required and given the opportunity to develop a more detailed budget of up to one page, as well as to complete an ORSP standard budget template, before routing a transmittal for approval and ultimately submission to the Foundation.

UM Internal Selection Process and Criteria

If multiple NOIs are and confirmed, ORSP RD will organize a down-selection competition, in accordance with the ORSP RD standard procedure for limited submissions[4], and will make every effort to select a nominee and inform all applicants of their fate by the posted date.

Proposal Preparation, Routing, Authorization, and Submission

Once confirmed as UM’s nominee, the applicant must comply with all UM ORSP policies and procedures[5] in developing and routing their final proposals, including the ORSP Administrative Routing Policy[6], the Sponsored Programs Action Notification (SPAN) form[7], and the ORSP Sponsored Programs Administration Proposal Development, Review, and Submission Timeline[8].
